Today, Governor Chris Gregoire and Commissioner of Public Lands Peter Goldmark successfully completed the firefighter safety test. By doing so, they will be able to more safely travel to the fire line in the unfortunate event of a large wildfire. Their effort highlights the need to be safe and prepared in the face of wildfire throughout the state.
While the weather remains on the cool side, the extended Memorial Day weekend brings a higher-than-average number of visitors to the forests, raising wildfire concerns. This year, DNR has seen 142 wildfire incidents on 812 acres within its jurisdiction alone.
This weekend will also bring out heavy traffic, so state officials encourage motorists to plan ahead and leave some extra time to get to destinations. We want everyone to enjoy their Memorial Day weekend, while staying safe and taking simple steps to prevent an accidental wildfire.
DNR protects more than 12.7 million acres of private, tribal and publicly owned forestlands and other wildlands from fire.
