Today, Friday Aug. 3, flags at all Washington state agency buildings are lowered to half-staff in honor of our coworker David Scheinost who died last week while diving in the waters south of Bainbridge Island.
David was 24 years old and lived in Puyallup. He found his passion in diving. Family members talk about how proud he was the day he graduated from the Divers Institute of Technology in 2010. His first job as a graduate took him to Louisiana where he worked for Ranger Offshor, Inc.
David joined DNR’s geoduck compliance dive team in February 2012.
On July 24, David and a team of divers were conducting routine sampling for levels of paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) in the Restoration Point geoduck tract managed by DNR when the incident occurred. His body was recovered on July 27 after a three-day search-and-rescue effort.
“David’s family and friends, as well as his fellow divers, are in our thoughts and prayers as we come to terms with the loss of such a young and vibrant life,” said Commissioner of Public Lands Peter Goldmark. “As a son, cousin, nephew, coworker and friend, David will not be forgotten.”
DNR is deeply grateful for all those who participated in the search and recovery for David’s body, including our own law enforcement staff and staff from our Aquatic Resources Division. We especially thank the Bainbridge Island Police Department, Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife, Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office, Pierce County Sheriff’s Office, Poulsbo Police Department, Seattle Fire Department, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Navy, and Washington State Patrol.
In addition, we thank the many kind residents living along the shore where the search and rescue efforts took place who generously opened their homes to David’s family while they awaited news of David.
And finally, we extend our profound condolences to David’s family.
