This week at the Seattle Aquarium, Governor Chris Gregoire and members of a special panel presented their recommendations for addressing the high acidity of our state’s marine waters.

Their message was clear: The situation is urgent, and we need to take immediate action to avoid devastating consequences to our state’s economy, environment, and quality of life.

Commissioner of Public Lands Peter Goldmark was appointed to serve on the Blue Ribbon Panel on Ocean Acidification, which the Governor convened last March.

The panel comprised scientists and policy experts charged with reviewing current knowledge about ocean acidification and its consequences on shellfish and other marine species. The panel was also asked to make recommendations based on their review as well as identify opportunities for coordination and partnerships to increase our knowledge and understanding of ocean acidification and how to address it.

DNR will play an instrumental role in the effort to better understand and help stem the rise of ocean acidity. For starters, Commissioner Goldmark and Lisa Graumlich, dean of the College of the Environment at University of Washington, are taking the lead on developing a center that will be the hub of scientific research on ocean acidification and will include partnerships with state and federal agencies and other research organizations. DNR will also provide some of the funding to develop the research center.

We will keep you up to date on the latest news and developments around DNR’s involvement with ocean acidification as the work progresses.
