George Ormrod wanted to get out of his office cubicle and experience wildland firefighting efforts. He wanted to be part of a bigger endeavor with the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Washington’s largest on-call fire department.

A long-time DNR employee, George couldn’t wait to embark on his new adventure this past year when he was dispatched to the Apache Pass Fire. On his way home from working on that wildfire for only a few days, he was sent to another fire to help with their efforts.

Washington’s wildfire season got a late start in 2012, but once it started, it was horrifying!

See what George had to say about his amazing experience as a fire camp helper in the South Sound Green Pages.
